Technology Development Co-op
Membership Explained:

Caravel was designed to be not only an easy-to-use content management system, but also a shared development framework that thousands of organizations could build applications on top of. The stage is set for the first large-scale technology development co-op to take shape.

Our long-term goal is to have Caravel be both a successful open source community project and a successful co-op. Vertical market content block applications (features) developed by the co-op would be accessible only to co-op members, and there not GPL, unless the co-op decides to release them. The exception would be if the co-op decides to refine an application contributed by the open source community.

One of the hardest parts of creating the co-op is pricing co-op membership right for organizations so that it both generates an appropriate amount of income to run the co-op and is perceived to be a good value by its members.

The pricing model 2004 is:

Caravel CMS Board Membership $10,000

Enterprise/Parent Organization voting membership for a market co-op (ie. K-12) $2,500
Enterprise/Parent Organization non-voting membership for a market co-op (ie. K-12) $1,000

Small/Individual Organization voting membership for a sub-market co-op (ie. Congregations) $500
Small/Individual Organization non-voting co-op membership $250

Hosting a basic Caravel-based site without Caravel Co-op features $129/year

Any development desired by the co-ops not covered by membership fees can be spread across co-op members. One hundred members even paying a market rate for development ($100/hr.) have a member cost of $1/hour. Even a small number of co-op members will derive significant benefit from spreading development costs.
